General Data Protection Regulation

This sub-page is maintained by Legal Services and is used to communicate awareness and guidance on the General Data Protection Regulation.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force in May 2018 and will supersede the Data Protection Act 1998. The GDPR is very likely to come into force before the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union and the U.K Government recently announced their intention to implement domestic legislation which mirrors the GDPR.

The Legal Services team will be publishing guidance and awareness documents on the GDPR throughout the University's work on implementation of the Regulation.

The Information Commissioner's website provides useful guidance on the key changes to data protection legislation under the GDPR. The University's mandatory data protection training module also flags some of the key areas of change under the Regulation. An overview of the GDPR and the University's preparation for the GDPR can be accessed here.
